Opioids are essential medicines for palliative care, useful for alleviating suffering for a few days after major surgery or a serious accident. However, the CDC recommends no more than 50 MMEs (or Morphine Milligrams Equivalents) per day to address chronic pain. And, opioids have not been proven effective for daily, long-term use. Therefore, the CDC does not recommend the use of sustained relief narcotic analgesics at all.
Unfortunately, most of the opioid prescriptions in the U.S. are written for common conditions like back pain. So, in these cases, opioid medications are more likely to cause more harm to patients than help.
Because the risks of opioid addiction with long-term use outweigh potential benefits. In addition, evidence suggests that chronic use of opioids can even make nerve pain worse, a phenomenon called hyperalgesia.
Over the last two decades, as prescriptions for opioids have soared, rates of addiction and overdose deaths also skyrocketed. By 2015, annual overdose deaths surpassed deaths from car accidents as well as guns.
The opioid crisis by the numbers:
In 2016, 62,000 Americans died from overdoses, 19 percent more than in 2015. What that means is that drug overdoses have killed more Americans in one year than both the wars in Vietnam and Iraq combined!
If you’re like many of us, you may be wondering “how did this happen?”
In his article “The Forces Behind Our Opioid Crisis,” Mike Newell, a retired ICU nurse, discusses the players and the practices that led to this national emergency.
When Oxycontin was first introduced into the market, he looked it up in Drug Facts and Comparisons. And what he found was astonishing!
Did you know that every mg of “Oxy” contains the equivalent of 10 mg of morphine? That means 10 mg of Oxycontin is the equivalent 100 mg of Morphine! And, if it’s given every 12 hours as directed, even the patients with the lowest dose of Oxy gets the equivalent of 210 mg of Morphine (or MMEs) a day. That’s more than 4 times the CDC recommended dose!
If you want to fix the opioid addiction crisis, first you have to fix the pain!
Patients have to have another option for pain relief.
If you’ve ever had a chronic illness or been in pain for longer than a few days, you know the biggest challenge: You forget what it feels like to be normal.
Trying to get control of your pain or illness makes your world smaller. And it takes most of your time, energy, and attention to manage your symptoms. So, the allure of opioid pain medications is that they appear to help – for a little while.
The only problem? While drugs offer temporary relief, they don’t solve the problem causing the pain!
